Nearly any auto parts store will test your battery for free to see if it holds a charge. That’s why it’s important to test the battery before you just replace it. Often, the battery light will come on, the alternator gets replaced, and then a few days later the vehicle dies. Once this battery reserve hits a certain level, the vehicle will begin to run erratically and will no longer start when the key is turned. As the alternator can no longer supply your Escape with an adequate power supply, it will begin to feed off of the reserve in the battery. Outside of the battery warning light, a dead battery is the most common symptom of a bad alternator. Also, some vehicles have an “alt” light that specifically tells you there is a problem with the charging system, and not the battery itself.
